 Stage 3 jettisoned.
One astronaut remains in the CSM, while the two others transfer to the lunar module, which separates and decends to the Moon on a lower orbit. Landing controlled with rocket engines.
CSM and lunar module approach the Moon, and a slowdown maneuver
is put into operation by a controlled retroburn. The spacecraft goes into orbit about three days after liftoff.
3 Returning home
The Moon-landing astronauts transfer back to the CSM. The lunar module is jettisoned.
Main engine on the CSM is fired to escape the Moon’s gravity and begin the journey back to Earth.
The lunar module lifts off using the descent stage as a launch pad. In orbit and once it has caught up with the CSM, tiny rockets on the lunar module are used to guide it back to the CSM to dock.
