Leaving Earth
Apollo separates from Stage 3. The CSM (control and service module) turns around to dock with lunar module still inside Stage 3.
Stage 1 liftoff
Stage 3 engine is reignited as the trajectory for the Moon is approached.
As the CSM “falls” to Earth, there is no further need for rockets. The service module (SM) with the rockets is jettisoned, leaving just the command module (CM) with the astronauts inside. The CM turns around so that the blunt end is forward.
 How the Moon landing and return were conceived as three separate activities. The timing of the launch and reentry had to be carefully coordinated with the changing position of the Moon with respect to the Earth. The diagram is not to scale.
The heat shield on the blunt end of the CM protects the capsule during descent through the Earth’s atmosphere.
Parachute is used for splashdown in the Pacific Ocean.
