Ionic (column)

What is an ionic column? An ionic column is a design of Greek and Roman columns with scroll-like tops.

An ancient Greek ionic column.

The Ionic column is one of the three decorative effects of classical architecture, the other two being the Doric (simpler) and Corinthian (more flowery).

You can pick out the Ionic column because it is characterized by the use of scrolls at the top (called volutes).

Video: This video shows both Corinthian and Ionic column decoration on the California Capitol (government) building.
