Chariot

What is a chariot? A chariot is a cart pulled by horses in which the rider stood up. They were mainly for military use.

How an Ancient Roman chariot race might have looked.

A chariot is a two-wheeled cart, designed to be pulled at speed behind horses and used in battle. It was used from the Bronze Age.

Chariots were used as soon as the spoked wheel had been invented about four thousand years ago. A solid wheel is too heavy to be used for speedy transport.

There are many famous battles and events featuring chariots. The Egyptian pharaoh Ramesses II was shown in a chariot at the Battle of Kadesh. The Romans used them in the Circus and British Queen Boudicca is famously shown going into battle on a chariot.
