Capital

What is a capital? A capital is the city in a country or state which contains the main government buildings.

London is the capital city of the United Kingdom. (View looks over Tower Bridge towards the Houses of Parliament)
Washington DC is the capital city of the United States. (View looks to the White House, the residence of the President)

A capital is often a very large city, perhaps even the largest in a country. This is true for the UK, France, Germany and many others.

However, if a country is made up of many states or provinces, then the capital is often a small place compared to other cities and only contains the government offices. This is the case for the USA, Canada, Australia and others.
