 The heat given off by the reaction causes the water to turn to steam. This is trapped as bubbles by the sticky liquid.
dehydration: the removal of water from a substance by heating it, placing it in a dry atmosphere, or through the action of a drying agent.
mineral acid: an acid that does not contain carbon and that attacks minerals. Hydrochloric, sulphuric and nitric acids are the main mineral acids.
Reaction of dilute sulphuric acid and copper
If dilute sulphuric acid (colourless) is poured on to a small pile of black copper oxide powder, the oxide reacts with the acid to produce a blue copper sulphate solution.
 The result is carbon that contains bubbles and looks like coke.
 The acid is poured onto black copper oxide.
 The copper oxide reacts and forms a blue solution of copper sulphate and water.
EQUATION: Reaction of sulphuric acid and copper oxide
Sulphuric acid + copper oxide ➪ copper sulphate + water H2SO4(aq) + CuO(s) ➪ CuSO4(aq) + H2O(aq)
