At night plants absorb oxygen and emit carbon dioxide.
During the day plants absorb carbon dioxide and emit oxygen during photosynthesis.
The oxygen reservoir is the atmosphere.
Animals respire, absorbing oxygen and exhaling carbon dioxide.
Oxygen is absorbed and released by the ocean.
 Oxygen (O)
Element 8 on the periodic table. A non-metallic chemical element of group 6 (the oxygen group).
Oxygen is the most common gas in the atmosphere after nitrogen, making up just over one-fifth of the Earth’s atmosphere. It is the third most abundant element in the universe after hydrogen and helium. It is a colourless, tasteless and odourless gas. Oxygen reacts with many elements to produce oxides. The most common oxide is water.
Oxygen was discovered in 1772 by the Swedish chemist Carl Wilhelm Scheele and independently by the English chemist Joseph Priestley in 1774.
 Oxygen – The oxygen cycle.
The French chemist Antoine Lavoisier gave oxygen its name.
Oxygen makes up 89% by weight of seawater and 47% by weight of the Earth’s crust. It is vital for almost all forms of life. Animals take in oxygen and give out carbon dioxide. Plants take
in carbon dioxide and give out oxygen. As a result, almost all of the oxygen in the atmosphere is from plants (the process is called photosynthesis). Some uncombined oxygen dissolves in water, providing the oxygen needed for marine animals.
Oxygen is manufactured by liquefying air.
Dead organic matter is oxidised in the soil; minerals are oxidised as they are weathered.
  Palladium (Pd)
 Oxygen group elements
The group 6 elements on the periodic table (also includes the chalcogens). The members of the group are (from top to bottom) oxygen (O), sulphur (S), selenium (Se), tellurium (Te), and polonium (Po).
P
Palladium (Pd)
Element 46 on the periodic table. This grey-white metal is a light transition metal.
It is used to increase the speed of chemical reactions (it is a catalyst). It does not corrode and it mainly appears in electrical contacts in telephone equipment.
