Anticyclonic gloom
Anticyclone – A yellow or purple sunset is characteristic of anticyclonic conditions, especially in autumn and winter.
Anticyclone – Summer anticyclones typically produce a sunny day with only cirrus clouds in the sky. Slightly poor visibility caused by dust in the air shows as haze towards the horizon.
Anticyclone – Seasonal high pressure regions develop in extreme northerly continental locations in winter and produce prolonged periods of clear skies. This allows the ground to lose heat by radiation and so cool down greatly. The cold ground, in turn, cools the air in contact with it, reinforcing the tendency for the air to sink, and thereby prolongs and intensifies the anticyclone.
Anticyclone – Radiation fog is typical of night and early morning conditions.
Anticyclonic gloom
Prolonged, dull, cold, windless conditions produced by anticyclones in winter. They are common over continental areas in the mid-latitudes.
