Zinc

What is zinc? Zinc is a soft, grey metal that is used in some battery cases.

Cheap batteries are often made with a zinc casing.

Zinc can be used to make the cases of economy batteries. The zinc case acts as one terminal of the battery.

As the battery works, the zinc is used up and so it gets thinner. At the end of its life, the zinc may become so thin that the battery begins to leak. This is why zinc batteries are not used as much as they were in the past.
