Voice box

What is a voice box? The voice box is a part of the body which makes an animal's voice.

A cockeral calling.

A voice box is found in birds and mammals. In mammals it is at the top of the windpipe, whereas in birds it is at the bottom of the windpipe. Inside the voice box are thin flaps of flesh which can be tightened or loosened. When air passes over them the animal can make the flaps vibrate. The sound produced by these vibrations is the voice.
