Vertebrate

What is a vertebrate? A vertebrate is an animal which has a backbone. This is part of a skeleton that is inside the vertebrate's body.

Sheep are vertebrates.

There are two major groups of animals. They are the invertebrates which are animals without a backbone, and the vertebrates which are animals with a backbone. All vertebrates have a skeleton. Most vertebrates have a skeleton of bone but some, such as the sharks and rays, have a skeleton of gristle or cartilage.

The vertebrate group is divided into five smaller groups. They are the fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals.
