Vegetation zone

What is a vegetation zone? A vegetation zone is a distinctive group of plants that live between certain heights up the side of a mountain.

Mountain vegetation zones.

Vegetation zones change quickly up mountains. Near the foot of the mountain it may be warm enough for broadleaved trees, then, further up the mountain it gets colder, and so a zone of coniferous trees is found.

Above this there may be further zones, each one representing the plants that can survive in harsher and harsher conditions.

The plants that live in the harshest conditions of all are called alpines.
