Transept

What is a transept? A transept is the part of the church that crosses the nave.

A church transept.

The transept is a part of the main church building that is at right angles to the nave. The transepts, the nave and the sanctuary form a cross when seen in plan.

The transepts (one on each side) cross the nave at the crossing. The crossing usually holds up a spire tower or dome. The end walls of the transepts often have large windows, commonly rose windows with stained glass in.
