There are many kinds of pollution. Here are some of them:
Air pollution is the release of chemicals and tiny dust and soot particles into the air. Gases include carbon monoxide, sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxides produced by factories and motor vehicles. Carbon dioxide causes the Greenhouse Effect.
Nitrogen and sulphur gases cause acid rain that kills plants, especially trees.
Littering is throwing away materials from homes, gardens and factories onto public or private places. Litter might be, for example, a beer can, a fridge, or the clippings from a hedge.
Noise pollution is made up of roadway noise, aircraft noise and factory noise. It can also be loud music being played in a place where there are other people who don't want to share it, such as playing a radio in a garden.
Soil contamination is pollution that results from farming or industry wastes. Fertilisers, herbicides, pesticides and oil can all pollute the soil.
Radioactive contamination occurs when nuclear power plants leak.
Heat pollution is a temperature change due to the activities of people. It causes Global Warming.
Water pollution is caused by pumping wastewater into rivers and lakes.
