Planet

What is a planet? A planet is a large body in space that orbits a star.

Planets in the Solar System. Note Pluto is now classed as a minor planet.

There are eight or nine planets which travel round the Sun (depending on whether you include Pluto). They are Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and the minor planet of Pluto. Most of the planets have smaller objects in orbit around them. These objects are called moons.

The forces of gravity between the Sun and its planets make the Sun wobble a little. Other stars have been found to wobble in a similar way. This knowledge has led to the discovery of planets around other stars.

Note: Pluto has recently been revised by some astronomers to be a minor planet, but most people still like to call it a planet.
