Pancake

What is a pancake? A pancake is a thick batter fried and served with sugar and lemon. Pancake Day is the day before the start of Lent.

An English pancake is a very thin batter made in a frying pan over high heat (video below). An American pancake is a very much thicker slab of batter (picture above).

Pancakes are often eaten for breakfast in the United States. They are known as a 'stack of pancakes' and this picture shows you why.

Pancake day is Shrove Tuesday, the day before the start of Lent. It was the day when people used up all of their surplus rich foods before fasting for Lent began.
