What is an oxbow lake? An oxbow lake is a bend in a river which has been cut off, and now makes a crescent-shaped lake.
This river changes course very often and you can see many curved lakes that show where the meander once was. Those that are closed off at both ends would be called oxbow lakes.
A popular Australian name for an oxbow lake is a billabong.
