Orange

What is an orange? An orange is the fruit of a citrus tree. Oranges were first eaten by the Chinese over 2000 years ago. Orange trees are now the most planted fruit tree in the world, and oranges make up nearly three quarters of all citrus fruit eaten.

Oranges grow in tropical and subtropical climates. Their fruit is mainly eaten directly or made into orange juice. The grated rind (called "zest" of an orange is used in cooking because of its strong taste. The rind/peel is especially used in marmalade.

Orange trees are not grown from seed, but by grafting from small pieces of existing orange trees. This ensures uniformity of fruit size and taste.
