Nylon

What is nylon? Nylon was the first manufactured fibre. It is made from some of the chemicals in oil.

Nylon rope.

Nylon is made from chemicals in oil. They are mixed with water and heated in a large container. When the mixture is cooled down a white solid is formed. This is made into flakes. The flakes are melted and the liquid is squeezed through small holes like those in a watering can. A long thread of nylon is made from each hole.

Nylon is a stronger fibre than either wool or cotton, but it does not absorb water as well as they do. If a piece of clothing is made entirely from nylon it is uncomfortable because the sweat cannot escape. Nylon is mixed with other fibres so a material can be made that is both strong and absorbent.
