Nefertiti

Who was Nefertiti? Nefertiti was the main wife of pharaoh Akhenaten.

Nefertiti.

Nefertiti lived in Ancient Egypt between about 1370 BC and 1330 BC. She was the Great (chief) Royal Wife of pharaoh Akhenaten. The statue of her suggests she was one of the most beautiful women in history.

Akhenaten and Nefertiti were responsible for changing the religion of Ancient Egypt temporarily from multiple gods to the single Sun god, Aten.

This was incredibly unpopular with the priests, as was the move of the capital from Thebes to Armana in the desert north of Thebes. But at the same time, Egypt was at its wealthiest, and so there was money to build whole new cities.

It is possible that Nefertiti was the mother of Tutankhaten (who later renamed himself Tutankhamun).

When Akhenaten died, Tutankhaten was too young to rule, and it is possible that the pharaohship was taken over by Nefertiti.

Video: Nefertiti and Akhenaten may have been the parents of Tutankhamun.
