Menkaure was the son of Khafre. Menkaure’s Pyramid is the smallest of the three Great Pyramids at Giza and smaller than the Red Pyramid at Saqqara.
It was 65m high when completed, but is now 61m high. The length of its sides at the base is 103m and its sides slope at 51°.
The bottom sixteen courses of blocks are made of granite brought down the Nile from Aswan. The rest were hewn from a local limestone quarry.
Menkaure’s Pyramid may have been made smaller than his father’s and grandfather’s pyramids because he could see that it was bankrupting the nation, and he was a less harsh ruler than his ancestors.
Menkaure died while the pyramid was only half finished. Nevertheless, it was eventually completed sometime during the 26th century BC.
