Jarrow March

What was the Jarrow March? The Jarrow March was a protest march by unemployed workers in 1936.

Jarrow March.

The Jarrow March (Crusade) from the shipbuilding town of Jarrow on Tyneside to London took place between 5 and 31 October 1936. It came about because of the great unemployment there was in the Northeast of England during the time known as the Depression.

The actual march involved about 200 men. Their purpose was to hand in a petition to the British government requesting the government find new work for them after the town’s shipyard closed.

The Jarrow March has become known down the years as a march to point out the distress that can sometimes occur to whole areas when their source of employment fails.
