Hoplite

What was a hoplite? A hoplite was a soldier of the Ancient Greeks who fought with a spear, and protected himself with a shield.

A Spartan hoplite.

A hoplite was the backbone of all Greek armies. They were citizens who fought on foot (they were infantry). Their main weapon was a very long spear. The intention was to kill an enemy before they could get at close quarters and use their swords. Hoplites could not fight independently with these long spears. They had to make a block of soldiers who all helped to defend one another.
