Golden Hind

What was the Golden Hind? The Golden Hind was a famous sailing ship, best known for taking Sir Frances Drake and his crew around the world between 1577 and 1580.

The Golden Hind (where hind means female deer) was an English galleon captained by Sir Frances Drake that made a journey right around the world in Tudor times. The journey, which began in 1577, took three years to complete.

The Golden Hind was one of five small 100 tonne ships that set sail from Plymouth. Drake was on a ship called the Pelican, but he renamed it before he went around the tip of South America.

Drake was a privateer (semi-official pirate) and he captured a Spanish treasure ship in the Pacific Ocean. It held 6 tonnes of gold and took Drake and his crew six days to load on to their own ship.

When he returned with his treasure (part of which was owed to Queen Elizabeth) he was knighted on board the Golden Hind.
