Dry stone wall

What is a dry stone wall? A dry stone wall is a wall made by placing stones together without using anything to hold them, such as cement. They are common in areas of hard rocks.

A dry stone wall in the Yorkshire Dales.

Dry stone walls are often built in mountain areas where there is a lot of stone on the surface. Many were built as a way of getting rid of stones on a field. Others were built in the days before barbed wire.

You might expect to see dry stone walls in areas with limestone and sandstone rocks, for example The Pennines, or with slate rocks such as Cornwall and Wales.
