Desert Rose/Gypsum

What is a desert rose? A desert rose is a mineral of yellow crystals formed by evaporating water in a desert.

Desert Rose, a form of gypsum.

A desert rose is a special growth of the mineral gypsum in a desert.

Gypsum is one of the minerals dissolved in water. In a desert, any rain that falls quickly evporates, and the minerals can no longer stay dissolved, so they come out as solid minerals. It just so happens that gypsum often forms these interlocking plate crystals (called twinning), and its pattern has given it the name of desert rose.
