The Biblical creation story is the first in the Old Testament. It is made up of two parts, making the first two chapters of the Book of Genesis.
In Genesis God creates the world in six days, starting with light and darkness on the first day, and ending with the creation of mankind on the sixth day. God then rests on the seventh day, declaring it a sacred day.
In the second part, God creates the first man from dust and breathes a soul into him. God then places him in the Garden of Eden and creates the first woman from his rib. She is to be both his companion and the way of creating new life.
This story was first written down in the late 7th century BC. It is not unlike similar stories that had been told down the ages by other peoples in the Middle East, such as the Mesopotamian peoples.
