Cella

What was Cella? Cella was the place where the valuables of a temple were kept in Roman times.

A cella was the building at the centre of the temple. This one contains a statue.

Cella was the building at the centre of a temple, and often the place where all the valuables were kept. It was windowless, and so it was the word adapted by monks many centuries later for the little rooms in which they slept. Cell was also adapted to mean the smallest part of a living thing.
