Cartouche

What is a cartouche? A cartouche is an oval mark that tells of the name of a king from Ancient Egyptian times.

A cartouche.

A cartouche is an oval which was drawn to contain the hieroglyphs that spelt out a king's or queen's name.

It's a kind of royal seal or formal signature. It was made up of two parts, the first name followed by the last name, although sometimes they were combined.

Cartouches give important clues to the pharaohs who built temples and other monuments.
