What is a canyon? A canyon is another word for a gorge.

This canyon is part of Canyonlands in the United States.

A canyon is the Spanish word for gorge.

People do not always use the word literally. The Grand Canyon, for example, is a deep valley, but it does not have sheer sides from top to bottom. Rather it is more like a steep staircase.
