Bluebell

What is a bluebell? A bluebell is a late spring woodland flower that grows from a bulb and has bell-shaped flowers.

Bluebells are one of the last of the spring bulbs to flower – oftenas late as May.

Bluebells produce a spike of a flower stem that has many blue bell-shaped flowers on it. The weight of the bells tends to make the top curl over and as a result the bells hang down.

Bluebells are largely pollinated by bumblebees.

They must make their seeds before the woodland trees produce leaves and turn the woodland floor into a place of shade.

After they have set seed, the bluebells die back into their bulbs, so you cannot see any sign of them in summer.
