Battle of the Atlantic (World War II)

What was the Battle of the Atlantic? The Battle of the Atlantic was the long struggle between 1939 and 1945, more or less for the whole of the Second World War, between Britain and her allies against German U-boats.

The Germans wanted to stop our vital supplies. So they sent out their navy to sink the ships carrying supplies to Britain across the Atlantic.

The Royal Navy organised the merchant ships into groups, called convoys, which they tried to protect with naval vessels.

The struggle between the German and British navies was called the Battle of the Atlantic. It was the longest battle of World War II, lasting from 1939 to 1945.
