Athens

What is Athens? Athens is the capital of the Ancient Greek city state.

The city of Athens, with the Acropolis in the centre.

Athens is the modern capital of Greece, although most people connect it with Ancient Greece in their minds. Athens is close to, but not on, the sea. It began around a flat-topped hill on which the Acropolis was built. People lived around this hill and were protected by a wall. There was a separate port city (Piraeus) connected to Athens by a road protected by more walls.
