Storms dominate large parts of the Earth’s surface. Reflection from the clouds is what makes it look bright from space. This picture shows a midlatitude cyclone.
One of the most powerful features of the atmosphere: a hurricane.
How the atmosphere circulates
Unlike many other planets with an atmosphere, the Earth has significant air flow between the equator and poles. Because it is colder at the poles than at the equator, there is a tendency for warm air to flow to the poles and for cold air to flow to the equator. As this air moves from one latitUde to another, it is caught by the changing speed of the Earth and is made to develop into spinning circulations. They are the midlatitude storms, of which the most powerful are hUrricanes.
