atom The smallest particle of an element. ionized Matter that has been converted
into small charged particles called ions.
ionosphere A part of the Earth’s atmosphere in which the number of ions (electrically charged particles) is enough to affect how radio waves move.
mesosphere One of the upper regions of the atmosphere, beginning at the top of the stratosphere and continuing from 50 km upward until the temperature stops declining.
molecUle A group of two or more atoms held together by chemical bonds.
solar wind The flow of tiny charged particles (called plasma) outward from the Sun.
The region immediately above the troposphere where the
temperature increases with height, and the air is always stable.
thermosphere A region of the upper atmosphere above the mesosphere.
troposphere The lowest region of the atmosphere, where all of the Earth’s clouds form.
water cycle The continuous cycling of water, as vapor, liquid, and solid, between the oceans, the atmosphere, and the land.
