 For centuries constellations have also been used as celestial timekeepers, their position in the sky telling, for example, when to plant crops.
Some objects in the sky do not, however, keep the same position, but move from day to day. The Greek word for wanderers is planetes, from which we get the modern word “planet.” Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn have all been known for thousands of years. Nowadays sky wanderers include some of the many satellites we have put into orbit around the Earth.
celestial Relating to the sky above, the “heavens.”
constellation One of many commonly recognized patterns of stars in the sky.
orbit The path followed by one object as it tracks around another.
satellite A man-made object that orbits the Earth.
