Looking at the night sky
We can all see patterns in the stars that dot the night sky. Examples include the Great Bear (Ursa Major), Orion, and the Southern Cross (Crux).
Some people have believed that the patterns represent gods or animals and other features. But in any case, the star groupings are one way of classifying objects in the sky. Major star groupings are called constellations.
Ursa Minor
Stars are very distant objects, and their position only changes very slightly over hundreds of years. They therefore appear to be fixed in the sky. Travelers have long used constellations for navigating both continents and oceans.
