amphoteric: a metal that will react with both acids and alkalis.
bauxite: an ore of aluminium, of which about half is aluminium oxide.
dissolve: to break down
a substance in a solution without a resultant reaction.
solution: a mixture of a liquid and at least one other substance. Mixtures can be separated out by physical means, for example by evaporation and cooling.
Underneath the bubbling a chemical reaction is taking place that is putting the aluminium into solution.
The aluminium container after reaction. Notice that the container no longer has a bottom! The reaction time from start to finish was five minutes.
Also:
If sodium hydroxide (caustic soda – a powerful base), is poured into an aluminium saucepan a chemical reaction will occur that dissolves the aluminium. Cleaning aluminium cookware with caustic soda
is therefore not to be recommended!
EQUATION: Dissolving aluminium in sodium hydroxide
Aluminium + sodium hydroxide+ water ➪ sodium aluminate + hydrogen 2Al(s) + 2NaOH(aq) + 6H2O(l) ➪ 2NaAl(OH)4(aq) + 3H2(g)
