This is a quarry in Portland. Limestone is one of the world’s most famous building stones.
coral reef: a region of the seabed where corals grow in massive banks.
ore: a rock containing enough of a useful substance to make mining it worthwhile.
porous: containing many small holes or cracks. Quite often the pores are connected together, and liquids, such as water or oil, can move through them.
Bands of limestone weather differently when exposed to the air, sometimes creating spectacular landscapes called karst scenery.
A piece of fossil-rich limestone. The body of the limestone is made up of tiny limestone balls (it is oolitic limestone). The reddish colouring is due to iron staining.
This limestone is made up of corals that became engulfed in a grey, lime-containing mud.
