alkaline: the opposite of acidic. Alkalis are bases
that dissolve, and alkaline materials are called basic materials. Solutions of alkalis have a pH greater than 7.0 because they contain relatively few hydrogen ions.
base: a compound that may be soapy to the touch and that can react with an acid in water to form a salt and water.
salts: compounds, often involving a metal,
that are the reaction products of acids and bases. (Note “salt” is also the common word for sodium chloride, common salt or table salt. It is therefore important to read the context of the word carefully to get the correct meaning.)

Iron III (ferric) hydroxide. A common example of this is rust.
