Catalyst
Cation
A positively charged ion.
Cerium (Ce)
Element 58 on the periodic table. A rare-earth metal and one of
the lanthanides. It is iron-grey and about as soft as tin.
Cerium was discovered in 1803 by Jöns Jacob Berzelius, Wilhelm Hisinger and Martin Klaproth. It was named after the asteroid Ceres. Although cerium is not widely known, it is as common on Earth as copper.
It is used for fine polishing
of glass, to make porcelain more
Catalyst
A substance that speeds up a chemical reaction, but itself remains unaltered at the end of the reaction.
(See also: Cobalt; Palladium; Platinum; Transition elements.)
Catalyst – The demonstration shown here uses the metal cobalt as a catalyst to speed up the breakdown of the chemical hydrogen peroxide. The reaction is so fast that, as oxygen is produced, it forms big bubbles that froth up the liquid so that the froth reaches nearly to the top of the glass tube. The reaction is over in a few seconds.
