 Explorer 6, with its “paddle-wheel” arrays of solar cells, was the first to take a TV picture of the Earth from space. Although it looks crude, it was an important step toward the high imagery standards that we now take for granted.
 The Explorer 17 satellite weighed 18 kg. It was an 89 cm stainless steel sphere designed to measure the density, composition, pressure, and temperature of Earth’s atmosphere. It was launched on April 3, 1963.
