Fuel tanks
Solid fuel motors are filled with chemicals, and a central shaft is left clear. The fuel around this shaft is then ignited. The motor burns from the inside outward. There is no means of controlling the rate of burning.
An engine being fired up during a test.
Pumps draw fuel into combustion chamber
Valves regulate the fuel flow
Combustion chamber
Nozzle directs the thrust
This diagram shows how fuel and oxidizer from two separate tanks are fed, via pumps, to the combustion chamber. Modern systems are much more sophisticated but still work on the same principle.
