Some of the satellites appear to control the way the rings behave. They are known as shepherd satellites. For example, the F-ring is shepherded by satellites
S15 and S16. Many of the satellites interact, sharing momentum and influencing one another’s orbits. All of the satellites are also influenced by Saturn itself, which pulls them into circular orbits.
Titan
Titan is the largest of the moons that orbit Saturn. It is also the only moon in the solar system known to have
a dense atmosphere. In Titan’s case the atmosphere is made of nitrogen with about 10% methane (the Earth’s atmosphere is nitrogen with about 20% oxygen and small amounts of other gases).
compound A substance made from two or more elements that have chemically combined.
momentum The mass of an object multiplied by its velocity.
satellite An object that is in an orbit around another object, usually a planet.
shepherd satellites Larger natural satellites that have an influence on small debris in nearby rings because of their gravity.
topography The shape of the land surface in terms of height.
All of the main satellites are to scale except for Pan, Atlas, Telesto, Calypso, and Helene, whose sizes have been exaggerated by a factor of five to show rough topoGraphy.
