This dramatic picture shows the Moon rover vehicle that was used on the Apollo 17 mission. Footprints can be seen in the soil that masks the rocky surface of the Moon.
The large boulder in the foreground is angular, suggesting that it was created by an event that shattered a much larger piece of rock, but that there has been no erosion since. Smaller fragments to the right of the boulder are also angular and unweathered. They may all be the debris created as a result of an earlier meteorite impact.
The soil is very thin, and so the rolling landforms in the background must reflect the shape of the rock below, possibly the result of ancient lava flows.
