A gibbous Moon: more than half but less than a full Moon. The name comes from the Latin for hump.

As the Moon orbits the Earth, we see only the parts of it that are lighted up by the Sun’s rays. Here the outer ring of images shows the Moon as we would see it from Earth. The inner ring shows the Moon as it would be seen from space.
