At this stage the natural glue is dissolved away by boiling the fibres in a soap solution.
Once the silk has been cleaned, it is soft. This silk is also shiny – a property that comes from the flat faces of the triangular section
of the filaments. The thickness of the yarn is measured in a scale called denier, which is a scale based on the weight in grams of 9,000 m of silk.
Special treatments are sometimes applied to give the silk a rustling sound when it is made into clothing.
Silk can absorb up to a third of its weight in moisture before it feels damp. It is easy to
dye and does not easily rot.
