(Below) The amazing changes brought about by the use of metal in machines is shown in this historic railway. The entire engine is made of metal, as are the tracks and the supports for the tressle bridge. Only the sleepers on the track and the upper framework of the carriages are made of wood. In the inset picture you can see how the use of traction engines allowed people to transport large quantities of goods across rough terrain, which would have been impossible before.
