oxidising agent: a substance that removes electrons from another substance (and therefore is itself reduced).
reducing agent: a substance that gives electrons to another substance. Sulphur dioxide is a reducing agent, used for bleaching bread.
 These pansies show
the effect of sulphur dioxide bleaching. A purple pansy was exposed to a sulphur dioxide atmosphere for two minutes and then put back in water, where
it turned yellow. If it had been subjected to an even longer exposure it would have turned completely white (colourless).
