acid rain: rain that is contaminated by acid gases such as sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxides released
by pollution.
oxidising agent: a substance that removes electrons from another substance (and therefore is itself reduced).
smog: a mixture of smoke and fog. The term is used to describe city fogs in which there is a large proportion of particulate matter (tiny pieces of carbon from exhausts) and also a high concentration of sulphur and nitrogen gases and probably ozone.
 At the end of the demonstration, water is added to give a blue copper nitrate solution. Nitrogen dioxide is very soluble in water, so the gas jar rapidly clears of the brown gas.
Nitrogen dioxide dissolved in water is nitric acid, one of the two main components of acid rain.
